Letter Tray for Royal Mail
Brief

Royal Mail use trays extensively to transport letters around their network.

Royal Mail were exploring the feasibility of changing the tray design to minimise storage space for empty trays.

RED Design Ergonomics were engaged by Royal Mail to input to the design development to focus on the usability of the tray.

Process

We adopted an iterative user-centred approach which included the following stages:

  • Requirements of the tray - what are the key requirements for the new tray

  • Research - review the current tray use in Royal Mail. User input to identify positive and negative features

  • Design development - input to the design of alternative trays

  • Prototype testing - in live settings with real Royal Mail operators and mail

Outcome

The revised design was not compatible with the current design. Therefore an alternative design was sought.

RED Design Ergonomics' input to the project had identified the key requirements. These fed into the further design development.

RED Design Ergonomics were again engaged by Royal Mail to input to the design of new letter trays.
